Indian nun elected Superior General of Dominican Congregation

Sister Mariamma Paul Ollukaran has been elected as the Mother General of the Dominican Sisters of Charity of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin during the 56th general chapter. 

The election occurred on June 27, 2024, at the congregation’s mother house in Tours, France.

Sister Mariamma, 65, is from Puthukkad, Thrissur district in Kerala, India. She joined the congregation in 1985 and made her final profession in 1990. 



She served as the provincial superior of the Indian province from 2003 to 2013 and as a general councilor from 2014 to 2024.

She holds a degree in Religious Sciences and a master’s in English Literature. She speaks Spanish, French, English, and Italian, among other languages.

When asked about the challenges of the Congregation, the Dominican sister said, “Finding appropriate and creative responses to offer dignity and freedom to our brothers and sisters who suffer in today’s deeply wounded world.”

The chapter also elected Sister Ana Patricia Londoño Flórez from Colombia, Sister Martha Mendieta Aztatzi from Mexico, Sister Scolastique Nayabzanga Bei from Burkina Faso, Sister Anula Irvin Suguna from India, Sister Beatriz Elena García Santa from Colombia, and Sister Nilda Leticia Miranda Romero from Chile as general counselors.

The Dominican Sisters of Charity of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin was founded in 1696 by Marie Poussepin. The congregation established a presence in India in 1971 and now includes about 3,046 sisters working in 36 countries. 

The sisters engage in charitable and educational activities, particularly in 14 dioceses in India.
