Philippine faith leaders call for the continuation of Pope Francis’ peace advocacy

The Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform (PEPP) expressed profound sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, hailing him as a global advocate for justice, peace, and compassion.

In a statement issued on April 25, the ecumenical group described Pope Francis as a spiritual leader who “devoted his life and ministry to the service of the Lord” and inspired millions worldwide, especially “in defense of the poor and the oppressed.”

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God,” the group quoted from the Book of Micah to frame its tribute.

The PEPP highlighted Pope Francis’ strong condemnation of economic systems that deepen poverty and inequality, as well as his call to confront environmental degradation.

“Occasional acts of charity are not enough,” the group quoted the pontiff as stressing, noting his January message for the World Day of Peace where he reminded the world that “the earth and its resources are meant to be used, enjoyed, and preserved by everyone, not just by a privileged few.”

The statement also cited the pope’s appeal for debt cancellation for poorer countries, recognizing what he called an “ecological debt” owed by wealthier nations.

Pope Francis was praised for championing the cause of refugees, prisoners of war, political detainees, and other marginalized groups.

The group recalled his Easter Sunday message on April 20, during which he urged a ceasefire in Gaza, called for the release of hostages, and appealed for food for the starving.

“Embracing the Gospel call to be peacemakers, he urged us to tear down the walls of division and build a community of peace rooted in justice,” the PEPP said. “His Holiness saw these as the true weapons of peace that can shape a better future.”

The ecumenical body called on people of faith to reflect on Pope Francis’ life and legacy and to follow his example by becoming “instruments of justice, peace, and the protection of human rights.”

The statement was signed by six PEPP leaders, including Archbishop Emeritus Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, D.D. of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro; The Rt. Rev’d. Rex B. Reyes, Jr. of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines; Bishop Emeritus Deogracias S. Iñiguez, Jr., D.D. of the Diocese of Kalookan; Sr. Mary John D. Mananzan, OSB of the Office of Women and Gender Concerns-CMSP; Rev. Dr. Aldrin M. Peñamora of the PCEC’s Peace and Reconciliation Commission; and Ms. Minnie Anne M. Calub, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in the Philippines.
