Photos: Philippine town of Paete revives centuries-old ‘Senakulo’ tradition

Theater performers from the Samahan ng Centurion Original (Association of the Original Centurions) of Paete, Laguna, staged the town’s annual Senakulo (Passion play) on Maundy Thursday, April 17, 2025.

The group reenacted the life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ in a street performance that forms part of their Holy Week observance and religious devotion.

This Lenten tradition features actors dressed in Roman centurion armor and biblical garments, dramatizing key scenes—from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion.

The Senakulo, a Filipino form of liturgical drama rooted in 17th- and 18th-century Catholic traditions, blends recitations of the Pasyón (a verse narrative of Christ’s suffering) with theatrical elements.

In towns like Paete, it is a vibrant expression of communal faith, drawing both local audiences and tourists during Holy Week.
