Archdiocese of Shillong celebrates Laetare Sunday with episcopal ordination

The Archdiocese of Shillong celebrated a historic event on Sunday with the ordination of Bishop Bernard Laloo as auxiliary prelate.

The Eucharistic celebration, held at Calvary Cathedral, drew more than 150,000 faithful who gathered to witness the significant occasion.

Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh presided over the ordination, joined by Apostolic Nuncio Leopoldo Girelli, three regional archbishops, thirteen bishops, two retired bishops, and numerous priests from across the region.

The ceremony also saw attendance from key government officials, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.

Fr. Richard Majaw, Episcopal Vicar, warmly welcomed attendees, setting an inclusive tone. As Apostolic Nuncio Girelli presented the Holy See Mandate in Latin, Fr. Majaw provided a translation into Khasi, allowing deeper engagement from the congregation.

Archbishop Lyngdoh, in his homily, noted the significance of the event coinciding with Laetare Sunday, a day marked by rejoicing in Lent.

“Today we rejoice because we have a new shepherd in the person of Bernard Laloo,” he said. Drawing parallels with Joshua from the Scriptures, Archbishop Lyngdoh highlighted Bishop Laloo’s responsibility to guide and nurture the faithful of Shillong.

“We are all liberated from sin through our own baptism. Let us be faithful in our journey to our promised land—Heaven,” the Archbishop said.

The offertory featured a cultural expression from Khasi and Garo children who performed traditional dances, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage and communal spirit.

In his Post-Communion address, Apostolic Nuncio Girelli expressed joy at participating in the ordination. He commended Bishop Laloo’s dedicated service to the Church and entrusted him to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“May St. Joseph inspire him as he works for the growth of the Kingdom of God in the pastoral care of the people of Shillong,” he said.

Bishop Laloo, in his thanksgiving address, expressed profound gratitude for his calling. “I thank God for my life and His presence throughout my journey,” he said, acknowledging the trust Pope Francis placed in him.

His episcopal motto, “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” (Is 40:31), encapsulates his ministry’s vision.

The day began in reflection, as Archbishop Lyngdoh shared a moment of prayerful introspection, remarking, “I have no degrees, no ability, but God’s grace is immense.”

The celebration concluded with a strong sense of unity and renewed commitment from the congregation, signaling a hopeful new chapter for the Archdiocese under Bishop Laloo’s leadership.
