Cardinal Ferrão calls for synodal approach ahead of Indian bishops’ plenary assembly

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), has called for a more inclusive and collaborative approach to Church governance and mission.

He highlighted the importance of adopting a participatory and synodal framework, according to a press statement issued by the CCBI General Secretariat.

Addressing a workshop for CCBI Secretaries and Regional Deputy Secretaries at XIM University in Bhubaneswar, the prelate highlighted the need for collective discernment, active participation, and shared responsibility within the Church.

“The Church must walk together, ensuring every voice is heard and valued,” the Cardinal said, stressing that the synodal approach not only fosters unity but also equips the Church to tackle modern challenges effectively.

The two-day workshop, held in preparation for the 36th CCBI Plenary Assembly from January 28 to February 4, trained participants in spiritual conversation methodology.

This technique aims to enhance dialogue and engagement during the assembly, which will focus on the theme, “Discerning Synodal Pathways for Mission.”

Cardinal Ferrão underscored the significance of openness to the Holy Spirit in shaping the Church’s mission, rooted in Christ’s example of humility and service.

“A Synodal Church listens, dialogues, and journeys together as a community,” he said, echoing Pope Francis’ vision for a Church that is more inclusive and responsive to the needs of its members.

The plenary assembly will bring together Bishops and Church leaders to explore ways of fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration. The discussions are expected to deepen the Church’s commitment to a shared vision and its mission in the spirit of synodality.

As the Church in India prepares to deliberate on its future pathways, Cardinal Ferrão’s call serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, inclusivity, and a commitment to walking together in faith.
