Catholic University of Parahyangan (UNPAR) in West Java’s Bandung remained steadfast in its decision to proceed with graduation ceremonies this weekend, despite receiving bomb threats from a group identifying itself as Jemaah Anshor Daulah (JAD).
The threats, sent to UNPAR’s dean, Prof. Ir. Basuki Joewono, warned of explosives allegedly planted at the university’s Arntz-Geise Auditorium, where the ceremonies are scheduled to take place from Nov. 15 to 17.
The chilling message, sent days before the ceremonies, stated: “We don’t hesitate to ignite the detonator,” if the program were to proceed as planned. Dean Joewono confirmed the receipt of the threat, though he refrained from sharing detailed contents, saying only that “they will detonate the bomb if we will perform our program.”
In a written statement to local media, Dean Joewono urged the academic community to remain calm, emphasizing that “all academic and non-academic activities are still set to happen as scheduled.”
He also reassured the public that the university had immediately reported the threat to authorities and that enhanced security measures were now in place.
“All security protocols are now implemented into force to deter any potential threats,” Joewono said.
UNPAR’s legal lecturer, Prof. Dr. Koerniatmanto Soetoprawiro SH, told LiCAS News that anti-bomb police squads had been deployed across the campus.
“Scores of anti-bomb police squad are already in the campus, carrying out their search-and-cleansing the area from any suspicious materials,” he confirmed.
The university has cooperated closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of its community and the success of the ceremonies, which are a significant event for graduates and their families.
Established in 1955 by Bishop Pierre Marin Arntz of Bandung and Bishop Paternus Nicholas Joannes Cornelius Geise of Bogor, UNPAR has a rich history of fostering academic excellence within the Catholic tradition. The institution serves as a shared legacy of both dioceses, continuing its mission of education and service.
