Jusoor, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to Syrian refugees worldwide, was honored with the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice.
The organization’s commitment to “maximizing the potential of Syrian children and young people affected by war and displacement through education and social advancement” was highlighted in the award citation presented by the Harmony Foundation during the ceremony on November 10 in Mumbai.
Harmony Foundation established the award in 2005 in honor of Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
In a report by AsiaNews, Jusoor’s executive director, Khaled Abu Ajwa, expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that it “is not only for Jusoor, but for the countless displaced children whose resilience and determination inspire us every day in Lebanon, the Middle East, and around the world.”
Reflecting on the hardships faced by children in war-torn Syria, he added, “They remind us that even in the face of adversity, dreams and hope can thrive.”
The Syrian conflict, now in its thirteenth year, has triggered widespread displacement, with 7.2 million Syrians internally displaced and 5 million refugees in neighboring countries, including approximately 1.5 million in Lebanon.
Jusoor supports young Syrians and host communities across the Middle East through educational and entrepreneurial programs.
The group said, “The Syrian conflict since 2011 and the economic collapse of Lebanon since 2019 have made Jusoor’s support essential for the lives of thousands of young people.”
Abu Ajwa emphasized Jusoor’s mission, highlighting the organization’s ongoing commitment to work alongside communities so that every child, regardless of background or circumstances, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential for a brighter future.
Founded in 2005 by Dr. Abraham Mathai, the Harmony Foundation aims to foster social cohesion and promote social justice without discrimination.
Its Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice has recognized numerous individuals and organizations for contributions to peace and harmony, including Nobel laureates Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai.
