St. Joseph’s Cathedral in the Archdiocese of Imphal marked its Silver Jubilee on October 5, 2024, celebrating 25 years of community and faith.
The event was themed “Praise and Glorify God” and featured a series of activities, beginning with a Thanksgiving Mass led by Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati.
He was joined by Archbishop Linus Neli of Imphal, his predecessor Archbishop Dominic Lumon, and around 50 priests.
The Cathedral, initially established as a parish, had been in existence for 19 years before it was elevated to its current status.
In his remarks, Archbishop Lumon highlighted the Cathedral’s architectural blend of local and international styles and the significant growth of the community over the years.
Archbishop Moolachira, in his homily, reflected on the importance of the jubilee, connecting it to the life and mission of the local community.

Following the Mass, a felicitation program featured various performances, including traditional Meitei and Rongmei dances. Attendees were welcomed by the St. Thomas Seminarians and Clarist Home with a musical presentation.
Students from Christ Jyoti School performed a traditional Meitei dance, and the Gaipuinam Dance Troupe showcased the Rongmei Steps.
Manipur MLA Ram Muivah expressed gratitude to the Church for its contributions to education, saying, “Everything I am today is because of my Church education.”
Archbishop Neli acknowledged the contributions of the organizing committees and shared details of his recent interaction with Pope Francis.
He said that during their meeting, he requested the Pope to pray for Manipur and its neighboring regions, presenting him with a memento that included a map of Manipur, the state animal of Manipur (Sangai), and his coat of arms.
According to Archbishop Neli, the Pope responded, “Don’t give up hope.” He relayed this message to the people of Manipur, reminding them of the need for “ecological peace and human peace, holistic peace.”
Former Minister Francis Ngajokpa shared a personal memory from 1964 when he encountered Fathers Bianchi and Daniel, reflecting on a confession in which a parishioner emphasized forgiveness despite language barriers.
He also urged Church leaders to emphasize catechesis and called for priests to wear distinctive attire to identify themselves.
The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks from Mrs. Lydia, Secretary of the Jubilee Committee, and the singing of the Jubilee Theme Song by parishioners.
A fellowship meal followed, blessed by Fr. Varghese Velickakam, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Imphal.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral Parish has played a central role in the spiritual life of the community and continues to contribute to education and support in Manipur.
