Church leaders in Timor-Leste expressed hope that the theme of Pope Francis’ visit to the country will inspire a renewal of faith among the people.
In a statement, the Timorese Episcopal Conference said the theme “Let your faith be your culture” is intended to encourage Catholics in Timor-Leste to deepen their connection to their faith as an integral part of their national identity.
“This theme aims to inspire all Timorese Christians to renew their baptismal commitment and to reaffirm the presence of the Catholic faith in Timor with the unique identity of the Timorese people,” said the bishops.
Reflecting on the historical papal visit by Saint John Paul II in 1989, the bishops noted its enduring impact on the nation and the Catholic community’s role in the country’s journey towards independence.
Pope Francis will lead a significant Mass at Tasitolu, where he is expected to draw a large crowd, emphasizing the unity and renewed spiritual commitment among Timorese Catholics.
With a predominantly Christian population, where 97 percent identify as Catholic, Timor-Leste is among the most devoutly Catholic nations.
The bishops expressed gratitude to the government and church officials involved in planning the visit, which they hope will fortify the faith and unity of the Timorese people.
The prelates prayed for the intercession of the Virgin Mary to ensure that the Papal visit would strengthen the Catholic faith in Timor-Leste, aligning faith closely with national and cultural identity.
Pope Francis will be visiting the country from September 9 to 11 before heading to Singapore for the final leg of his Apostolic Journey in Asia.
